African Waste Management - increasing complexity matched by great new solutions
Sustainable waste management services are in high demand in major cities in Kenya given the vast of the problem. There is need to empower entrepreneurs in waste management in light of the problems above. Integrated waste management plans launched by cities such as Nairobi propose sanitary landfills and identifies need to invest in technology. Technology can itself reduce challenges in transportation and coordination of collection initiatives, either by one organization or among many organizations.
Other important initiatives include use of recycling technologies and those that generate energy from waste. The county is also planning for a sanitation landfill to replace the already full principal dumpsite. Therefore, adoption of the full aspects of smart technologies in waste management is expected to generate additional benefits. Smart municipal solid waste technologies focus on a number of aspects listed below:
- Smart collection (e.g. radio frequency identification [RFID] tagging of components, use of global positioning system [GPS] routing, and pneumatic tubes),
- Smart processing (e.g. advanced material recovery facilities [MRFs] and mechanical biological treatments [MBTs], and refuse- derived fuel [RDF] production facilities)
- Smart energy recovery (waste-to-energy [WTE], waste-to-fuels [W2F], and landfill gas-to-energy) and
- Smart disposal (sanitary landfilling, bioreactor landfills, and solar integration)
Brought together, these types are solutions are creating Cleanleaps in Kenya and as we've seen over the past few weeks a number of advanced solutions are being deployed in Ethiopia. Africa's waste management soliutions may be getting more complex but the solutions are now starting to look world-class.
